Ganesha, who is also is known and called as Ganapati, Vinayagar and Pillaiyar, is one of the best-known and most worshipped deities in the Hindu Pantheon of Gods. People worship him regardless of affiliations. Devotion to Ganesha is widely diffused and extends to various parts of Universe, especially and in countries with large ethnic Indian and Sri Lankan populations. Ganapathi / Vinayagar has many attributes. He is readily identified by his elephant head. He is widely revered, more specifically, as the remover of obstacles and believed to bring good luck, the intellect and wisdom. As the god of beginnings, he is honoured at the start of rites and ceremonies. Ganapathi / Vinayagar is also invoked as a patron of letters and learning during writing sessions.

Sankatahara Chaturthi, is a day in every lunar month of the Hindu calendar dedicated to Lord Ganapathi / Vinayagar. This day falls on the fourth day of Krishna Paksha (the dark lunar phase or the waning fortnight of the moon).
On this day, devotees observe a strict fasting. They break the fast at night after having darshan / auspicious sight of the moon preceded by prayers to Ganapathi / Vinyagar. Devotees believe their wishes will be fulfilled if they pray on this day. Observing this fast is believed to reduce problems, as Ganapathi / Vinyagar is the remover of all obstacles and the supreme lord of intelligence.

At SVT, Ganapathi / Vinyagar Chathrthi is being celebrated on Monday the 18 September 23 with fervour associated with the occasion. The Programme for the day commences at 9.00am with Ganapathi Homam followed with Abhishekam, Alankaram and Maha Deeparadhanai for Sri Varasiddi Vinayaka.
