He was one of the main authors of Shaiva Thirumurai, the key religious text of Tamil Shaiva Siddhanta.  His work ‘Thiruchitrambalakkovaiyar’ was sung entirely in Thillai Chidambaram. Throughout his work,  Manikkavachagar discusses how important it is to forego attachments and cultivate dispassionate, devoted, sincere and simple hearted love to Lord Siva in order to attain beatitude.

Manikkavachagar’s work ‘Thiruvembavai’, a collection of twenty hymns in which he has imagined himself as a woman following the ‘Paavai Nonbu’ praising Lord Shiva. The twenty songs of  ‘Thiruvembavai’ and ten songs of ‘Thirupalli Ezhuchi’ for the Thirupperunturai Lord’ are sung during the holy month of Margazhi.

The Holy books ‘Thiruvasagam’ and ‘Thirukkovaiyaar’ having got the unique distinction of being penned by the Almighty Himself.
