VAIKASI VISHAKAM NAMMAZHWAR THIRUNAKSHATRAM

Vaikasi Vishakam – Nammazhwar Thirunakshatram
on Friday the 2nd June 2023

Nammazhwar , one of the twelve azhwars is well known for his many hyms on devotion to Vishnu. He was born on the 42nd day of the beginning of Kali Yuga in the Vishakam star in the month of Vaikasi. NammAzhwAr is hailed as Vaishnava Kula Pathi – the leader of the Vaishnava fold.

NammAzhwAr was born in ThirukkurugUr (AzhwAr Thirunagari). Throughout his life (which only lasted 32 years in this samsAram), he stayed under the tamarind tree (thirupuLiy AzhwAr) and was always in yOgam (meditation) thinking about Sriman Narayanan.

NammAzhwar has sung 4 divya prabhandhams namely,

· thiruviruththam (rig vEdha sAram)

· thiruvAsiriyam (yajur vEdha sAram)

· periya thiruvandhAdhi (atharvaNa vEdha sAram)

· thiruvAimozhi (sAma vEdha sAram)

NammAzhwAr’s prabhandhams are cosidered parallel to the 4 vEdhas. He is also known as “vEdham thamizh cheitha mAran” – one who gave the essence of samskrita vEdhas through his thamizh prabandhams.

ThiruvAimozhi is glorified as the essence of all the 4000 divya prabandhams sung by AzhwArs.

AT SVT we celebrate His Holiness’s Tirunakshtram on the 2nd June ’23.

As a lead up to this, divya prabhandam (Tiruvoimozh -1102 versesi) will be chanted every evening commencing on the 30th May and culminating on the 2nd June morning.
