Skanda Shasti Vratam is observed once a year in the month of “Aippasi” (October-November) starting from the “piratamai” the 1st phase of the brightening moon.
It’s the day when Lord Muruga vanquished the demon Surapadman who was terrorising the Universe. Lord threw his divine spear ‘Sakthi Vel’ at a Vanni tree where Surapadman was hiding….splitting it into two parts…which in turned into Peacock and Rooster…zealous devotees of Skanda. This epic ‘Sura-Samharam’ is part of the celebration of Skanda Sashti.
